What Is Teen Therapy?

A Space That's
Just for Them

Teen therapy provides adolescents with a private, confidential space to talk about what’s really going on — without fear of judgment from parents, teachers, or peers. It’s a relationship built entirely around their needs.
Teenagers are navigating enormous change: identity formation, social pressure, academic stress, family dynamics, first relationships, and an increasingly complex digital world. A skilled therapist helps them develop the emotional tools to move through it all.
“Adolescence isn’t just a phase to survive — it’s a formative season that shapes who we become. Good support at this stage changes everything.”
Common Relationship Struggles

What Brings Teen to Therapy?

Relationships are hard. These are the most common challenges that bring teens to seek support.

Anxiety & Overwhelm

Academic pressure, social anxiety, perfectionism, or a constant sense of dread that makes everyday life feel exhausting.

Depression & Low Mood

Persistent sadness, loss of interest, hopelessness, or withdrawal that goes beyond normal teenage moodiness.

Social Media & Identity

Cyberbullying, comparison culture, identity confusion, and the mental health impact of constant digital connectivity.

Relationship Issues

First heartbreaks, difficult friendships, peer conflict, or feeling fundamentally misunderstood by everyone around them.

Family Conflict

Navigating difficult family dynamics, divorce, blended families, or feeling caught between parents and their own growing autonomy.

Trauma & Self-Harm

Teens who have experienced trauma, are engaging in self-harm, or are struggling with unhealthy coping mechanisms need specialized support.

How It Works

What Teen Therapy Looks Like

Teen therapy is collaborative, flexible, and completely centered on what the teen needs. Here’s how the journey typically unfolds.

Parent and/or Teen Consult

We start with a brief consultation — with a parent, the teen, or both — to share background and goals. After that, teen sessions are treated as confidential, in keeping with California law on minors' consent to their own care. In custody situations, access to information may vary — we're happy to walk through specifics at intake.

Building Trust

The first few sessions are about relationship-building. Teens open up when they feel safe and trusted — so we take our time getting there.

Identifying Core Issues

Together we identify the real drivers of distress — whether that's anxiety, identity, relationships, trauma, or family dynamics.

Active Skill-Building

Using evidence-based tools (CBT, DBT, mindfulness, somatic awareness), we build practical coping skills that work in real life.

Growth & Independence

As the teen gains confidence and tools, we track meaningful progress together. Our goal is to help them build lasting independence and carry these skills forward into daily life, guided by consistent, ongoing support along the way.
